Those Devils in Baggy Pants
Published in Library Binding by Buccaneer Books (December, 1996)
Author: Ross S. Carter
Average review score:

They died for you. Do you remember?
I have read upwards of twenty book about W W I I. This ranks at the top of all lists. I read it at age 17 and was overwhelmed. I read it at age 62 and was overwhelmed.
This is a first hand account of a paratroop division that fought the Nazis for two years, sometimes going for several weeks under fire without beds, warm food, clean clothes or water to bathe in. The hardships are stated simply and frankly without embellishment and they are chilling. The sudden death, the casual and astonishing acts of bravery and the mass murder of war are all presented the same way. And yet there is literature.
The author never speaks of his own conduct in war, he only observes. Fewer than half a dozen men he started out with came back alive. He died of cancer shortly after finishing this book. One of the survivors of his unit visited his grave with the author's brother and said, "The bravest man I ever knew is buried on that hill."
This is as close as you can come to understanding war without being there. The feats of the common men that Ross Carter served with are feats one would only expect of a superman. They laughed about it, lived with it and died with it. The book compares with "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Remarque, with "To Hell and Back", by Murphy and with "Her Privates, We", by Manning.

Excellent insight into the 504th PIR during World War II.
History books rarely get into the everyday lives and thoughts of soldiers during war. This book does that and more by chronicling the exploits of Company C, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division during its 6 European Campaigns during World War II. The book is a little rough around the edges because Ross Carter, a member of Company C, died of cancer in 1947 before he could rewrite the original draft. Still, it conveys the thoughts and actions of this elite force like no history book can. Especially compelling is the Battle of Cheneux during the Battle of the Bulge which has been compared to the final battle in Saving Private Ryan but with many more casualties.

World War II history of an 82nd Airborne Div. Paratrooper
In two years of researching my father's involvement in the Second World War, I found Carter's personal history to be by far the most honest account of combat I've ever read. In telling the story of himself and the men in his platoon, the author provides the reader with an up close and personal look at the comraderie, the terror, and the horrors of war. From North Africa, to Sicily, Italy, France, and Belgium, where he is severely wounded at The Battle of the Bulge, Carter tells a deeply moving story of a small group of brave, honorable men of the 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment. Casting his fellow soldiers as simply young men doing their jobs, the author's account will bring to frequent tears any reader with a sense of duty, honor, and country.

A Book For everyone Fan or Not!!
I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read it is a great book.. I have been a reba fan for years and when I got her book I read it about 1000 times.. there is alot of lessons in there about life and things and alot of Uplifting stories to boot.

This is THE book!!
For anything you want to know about Reba's life, this IS the book to read. I was not fond of country music of any kind, until I read this book. Now, I am a HUGE Reba McEntire fan..one of the biggest, because I gained enormous respect for her for bringing the truth out to all her fans. This book is funny, sad, sometimes surprising...but always well written, straight from the heart. You will enjoy this book, and the audio is great too because she reads it herself! I highly reccommend it.

This Book Is A Must Read for any Reba or Country Music Fan!!
This book is a MUST read, even though I am a HUGE Reba fan, and somewhat partial!! It is the story of her life, and the lessons she learned while growing up in Oklahoma, as well as, her rise to fame as one of country music's leading ladies. It is the ONLY book that she has had anything to do with writing, with the exception of the upcoming, "Comfort From A Country Quilt" (I CAN'T WAIT!! :-), and therefore, is the only completely true account of her life. I loved this book...It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!! It is a fantastic book!!!! "Forever Love" You Reba!!

Aaron Carter: The Little Prince of Pop: The Real Inside Scoop from His Mom

Average review score:

The Best book ever! Aaron's the man!
I just wanted to tell everyone out there, who is going to or has read the book, its the best book ever. I know Aaron Carter, hes my really good friend,I love him. It was well written and put together very nicely. Everyone out there should read it. I love you Aaron!

Best Aaron Book You Will Ever Read
Who knew you could do so much reading in one summer? This is the only book I have bought/read over the summer, and let me tell ya, its really good, I read it in a little under 2 days. This is probably the best Aaron Carter book you will ever read since it is a true life story written by the one who knows him best! Mom, Jane Carter, who is also the author of Nick Carter's book The Heart And Soul Of Nick Carter. I recomend this to Aaron fans and also the lonely hearted ones who have doubted Aaron's succsess may need to think twice about critisizing Aaron because of his young age, hey, he wont be this young 4 long! It tells his whole life story including how he was just a 6, going on 7 year old frontman headbanging and screaming covers of Greenday along with his teenage bandmates for a local rock school band, Dead End and what he thought of it. This will surely settle some rumors and untrue stuff you might have heard in the past. And answer some questions like Why soes Aaron want to attend regular school? Why is cotton candy a no-no? Whats it like to be a twin? and many, many more! It is also filled with a color photo insert and some black and white photos at each chapter! Enjoy!

This book ROCKS.......
Hi, i am Aaron's number:1 fan and ive LOVED him since he was 7 when his first little web-page came out...I have followed him growing up and untill this book came out I thought I knew every-thing a fan could know about him, but I was wrong this book takes you threw his wonderful life and growing up and family and being on the road...There are breath-taking picture that stole my heart, and a quiz at the end...This book is the best book I have EVER read and it stole my heart, Jane Carter you ROCK.... Aaron Carter you ROCK my world and youve stole my heart....

The Heart and Soul of Nick Carter: Secrets Only a Mother Knows

Authors: Jane Carter and Nick Carter

a book about the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
a book that gives us the inside story, where other books about Nick will never reach.A book for all die-hard Nick Carter fans. You have to get it! The book is filled with info about Nick's life,it's filled with joys and tears, that make you cry and laugh all at the same time. And at the end,you look at Nick in a different light,he's not just a blonde haired, blue eyes, great smile guy in one of the worlds most talented bands,he's a person. He worked hard to achieve his goal, and thank the lord he did,or I wouldn't be able to sleep at night, without hearing his voice! This is one of the best books that I have ever read,if you are one of the die-hard Nick fans, like me,you'll know that this book will be worth every cent of your money. Mrs.Jane Carter,I salute you for raising Nick in your tender love and care, thanks for helping him achieve his goal!

By knowing the mother, you know the son...
When Mrs. Carter said that she would talk about her in the book, I've realized that it was a matter of fact that she should talk about her first. Thanks for opening your heart to us Mrs. Carter. Now I understand why Nick do this or that. The parents reflects on their children. After reading "The Heart And Soul Of Nick Carter: Secrets Only A Mother Knows" (which I've finally found after several months of seeking!) I can now say that I know Nick, better than I used to. Of course, I agree with the ones that say that is not a real author who wrote it, but Mrs. Carter probably wrote it with her heart, not her head. It's sweet and simple. You don't have to use the finest words of the dictionnary to make people understand who your son is. I will look at Nick differently now... It was a good idea to write a book about Nick, by his mother. I wish that all the BSB's mothers could do the same about their son. Thanks Mrs. Carter, for opening the gates of your heart, soul, family, house, and for sharing those secrets with us.

Honest, loyal, and true...the best Nick Carter book around.
I love the Backstreet Boys and I've been a huge fan since '97, and I'm an even MORE huger fan of Nick Carter. THE HEART AND SOUL OF NICK CARTER: SECRETS ONLY A MOTHER KNOWS is one of the best books you can find on Nick Carter. Though it's a little out-dated now I believe (the book was made in like, '98 and the Backstreet Boys since then have done a lot more plus made two new albums MILLENNIUM and BLACK & BLUE), I still think this book gives an accurate bio of Nick and his amazingly talented family.

There is not one dull or boring moment while reading this book. Jane Carter carefully describes what their family life was like both in the past and present, along with the ancestors and family relatives. When you're reading this book, you really do feel like you're apart of the "Carter Clan", as Jane calls her family. You'll laugh and cry and cheer throughout this book. And even though I'm a huge fan and have never been to a Backstreet concert or seen them live in person, I now feel a lot closer to Nick Carter, and not just him, but to Kevin, AJ, Brian, and Howie as well.

Jane Carter also writes about the troubles she and Nick went through while going to auditions, performing in front of audiences during Nick's pre-Backstreet years, and even meeting AJ and Howie for the first time. She also writes about the very first song Nick ever sang to her - "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" - and why that was so important to her. She writes about the ups and downs her family had to go through to help Nick achieve his dream as a successful entertainer, which I think he has now successed!

Besides, the fabulous well-written bio, she also adds a ton of family photos for us fans to look at and enjoy and even a Nick Carter quiz at the ending (I took it and got a perfect score without even looking at the answers!). This book will answer all of your Nick Carter questions. And though it may only be for Nick Carter fans, I'm sure many Backstreet fans will enjoy this as well. I actually think you don't even need to be a Backstreet fan to enjoy this book. Maybe if you read it you would understand Nick Carter and his Backstreet fellas and would start to appreciate him more and see him as a real person. I also don't think Jane Carter brags about her son; she is proud of his major accomplishments and what he has done for the family. And she isn't afraid to show it.

I think Jane Carter and Bob Carter are the perfect role models for parents everywhere. They show love and affection to their family and to each other. They try to help achieve their childrens' dreams and do not discourage them. They do not do drugs or commit violence or abuse each other or their children. The Carter Clan is a beautiful family and very gifted and talented. I think they should all be respected and people should stop trashing them because that is just wrong when you don't even know a thing about them. Maybe after you read THE HEART AND SOUL OF NICK CARTER you will change your mind about trashing this family and start to respect them. Great read. I loved all the photos. If you're a fan of books then this is definitely one you must try!

Almost a Whisper: A Holistic Approach to Working With Your Horse
Published in Hardcover by Alpine Pubns (01 November, 1999)
Authors: Sam Powell and Lane Carter
Average review score:

Understanding horse psychology for more effective training
Sam Powell and Lane Carter's "Almost a Whisper" provides a basic guide for horse owners who want to work with their horses. From the foundations of basic horse behavior patterns to understanding horse psychology for more effective training, this book provides a general focus on understanding and communicating with horses.

The Character of a Whisper
This book speaks volumes more than the 160 or so pages. Having read just about every book I can on Equine care etc., this is one that stays at the top. Sam not only communicates with the horse, but more importantly us all knowing humans.

One significant issue that struck me as so different is the character Sam demonstrates in giving credit to others. Very specifically his father for teaching him so much early on. Sam that is character. Something that is probably recognized by the horse quicker than the human.

This is a great book. Will it teach you something you have not already read in other trainers (whisperers) books. You bet it will. It has depth and a total lacking of self promotion. It has soul.

Sam and Lane, Thanks.

Thank you Sam
Sam is the " genuine article", a true horseman. I read the book and then found Sam. I have seen or been to many of the hyped up, famous horse " whispers" clinics/productions, and three trainers. I've read a ton of horse books. Thanks to Sam's book, I have now met and had him help me with my horses. If you want glitz and hollywood glamour, you won't find what you are looking for in Sam's book. If you are looking for someone to tell you how pretty your horse looks with his whiskers sheared, you won't find this in his book either. If you are looking for a real horseman, you will find him in this book. My horses have found a true friend and knowledgeable horseman in Sam. My hope is that after reading his book, you will begin to see the horse from the horse's point of view as opposed to the Hollywood image. One book can't cure all your horse problems, but it does give you insight and a place to begin. Many thanks to ... for recommending this book. Many, many thanks to Sam and Lane for being such gentle souls and taking the time to write this book for the benefit of the horse.

Feely Bugs

Great for toddler sensory development...but
This book has many interesting textures and colorful pictures. Kids love it...but, so you know, the drawbacks are: 1. kids will yank out the feathers on the feathery bug page 2. if you have a "busy" child they will likely tear the pages. The pages have gaping areas where the textures come through; great for little fingers to YANK! 3. There is NO story line at all...just a one word adjective + the word "bug" on every page BUT, my son loves it...it just won't last for the nect child.

The nanny gives this book a definite 5 stars!!!
I began taking care of a little boy when he was just over a year old and from the first day when he pulled this book out, until almost 2 years later, it's STILL his all-time favorite book! He absolutely loves to feel all of the different textures and blow on the feathers! This book is always his first choice, even though we've probably read it at least 100 times. He still loves it and yes, especially the CRINKLY BUG!! Coming in second are the sticky bugs! I would recommend it to all parents and nannies!

Favorite book of all!
We bought this book for our son when he was 12 months old and it's definitely his favorite book of all. The colors and textures keep his attention and I am able to work with him on his colors and words at the same time, while not being overwhelmed by so much on the page like so many other books. His favorite is wrinkly bugs... he loves to lick it. Please watch them with the book, as many have said there are parts that can come loose and be a choking hazard.

Josey Wales: Two Westerns: Gone to Texas/the Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales
Published in Paperback by University of New Mexico Press (November, 1989)
Authors: Forrest Carter and Lawrence Clayton
Average review score:

2nd Greatest Western
I'd rank this one right below Owen Wister's The Virginian on my own list of all-time greatest westerns. If I'd read this book two years ago my son would've been named Josey Wales Lambert. Every Southerner, no, every American should read it, digest it, and live by the same code. Yeeeha!

The book and movie
"The outlaw Josey Wales" the movie is my favorite western movie. I had not read the book until recently, and found the book as good as the movie. In fact I viewed the movie after reading each chapter and they are almost exactly the same. This story is a story of what our west was like after the civil war. It is a fun and easy read, and you will dread the story being over. A great gift would be the book and the movie for your Western loving friend

Western with a Different Slant on Post Civil War Times
This book tells two consecutive stories about Josey Wales that take place right after the War for Southern Independence, a period of time about which I did not have a lot of previous information. The first is a story about individualism and government abuse of those individual who don't fit the mold or have no use for the "services" that a government longs to provide. The second is more of a pure western and a vengence tale after some of Josey's friends are murdered. Although he'll kill a man in a second if he's crossed, you can't help but admire his character and courage. I've lent this book to three of my friends and they all tell me that the book was great. Overall, a very enjoyable read, expecially if you're not a big government lover.

No Such Thing As a Bad Day: A Memoir (Thorndike Large Print Biography Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (January, 1901)
Authors: Hamilton Jordan and Jimmy Carter
Average review score:

A Memoir that grabs you and holds you to last page!
A good friend sent me this book even though she calls me a "right-wing Republican" and not a Carter fan even though I happen to live in Georgia and ironically have the same last name at the author. This book is bigger than all that. It is the human story of one man's life, rich stories about Vietnam, Washington and the civil rights movement and powerful, emotional and important stories about Mr. Jordon's three different bouts with cancer. But not just a cancer book but a book for anyone who likes a good read that grabs you and holds you and holds you to the very last page!

You Won't Be Able to Put This Book Down
Being a southerner myself, and also having almost every single male member of my family die of cancer, this book really hit home for me. It is inspirational and full of hope. I think Mr. Jordan's legacy will not be his time in politics, but more importantly it will be his own life story and the war he and his family have waged against cancer. The book is uplifting and entertaining. The political history itself makes the book a fascinating read, but the real story is Mr. Jordan's successful battles with cancer. I am so glad that I had an opportunity to read this book, and I truly believe that it will inspire anyone who picks it up. I guarantee you won't be able to put it down- I couldn't!

A Masterpiece
Unquestionably the finest memoir that I have read in my life. Mr. Jordan powerfully describes his most personal experiences with both cancer and American politics in an incredible manner. This book contains stories that every human should have the opportunity to read. Mr. Jordan is a cancer survivor, a family man, a politial leader, and most importantly a gentleman. My recomendation is to not only buy this book for yourself, but also copies for every person who is important to you as well. You certainly will be glad that you did. I thank Mr. Jordan for writing such a wonderful book for us all to read. It is certainly as good as they come.

A Princess of Mars (G K Hall Large Print Science Fiction Series)
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (February, 2001)
Author: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Average review score:

Imagination & Adventure!--WOW!..A must read!
You want imagination?..adventure?..a few dabs of science(remember it was written in 1912)?..an ageless hero?..an absolutely beautiful damsel in distress?..a whole new world?..with a language all it's own?..inhabited with strange new creatures?.. friends and foes?..battles royal?..This book, and all 10 or 11 sequels, have it all! ER Burroughs was the early master of science fiction, adventure, and imagination; a man ahead of his time, and he gives the reader a roller-coaster ride of incredible adventures. Join with us now as John Carter meets, rescues, and captures the heart of the INCOMPARABLE Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars!, and eventually, along with his friend Tars Tarkas, follows suit with the entire red planet, Barsoom to its wild and whacky inhabitants.

Is this intellectual literature?..of course not. Is it non-stop fun and enjoyment, the original page-turner novel?...You bet it is! Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!

I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them, and I continue to enjoy. You will too.

GET THIS BOOK! Read the whole series!
John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, they are all here! This is the totally unbelievable story of a man who got transported to Mars basically, because he thought it would be cool to go, so he wished it, and POOF, he's there. Then, there's the fact that the planet itself and the life on it are also completely ridiculous. FORGET ALL THAT! Read it to be swept up in one of the greatest adventure series of all time. John Carter goes to Barsoom (Mars, to the Martians) rescues the most beautiful woman in the universe and (later in the series) conquers an entire world through the power of his will and the strength of his right arm. Handsome, powerful heroes, beautiful half naked captive princesses just panting to be rescued, Villians, so evil you want to go back in time to strangle their parents, Big ugly friends, (What are you laughing at, remember Chewbacca?) strange beasts, stranger aliens, wierd science, epic battles, betrayals, great reunions. This one's got it all. The best of Burroughs' body of work, the most action packed series from the true master of the action story. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the creator of Tarzan. Don't ever pick up his work expecting an intellectual workout. Just get in and hang on for the ride

Not just for guys!
Princess of Mars is a fantastic, wild ride. I think everyone makes a mistake though of saying it's just a guys book. I'm a woman, and it was my mother who recommended Princess to me! I think any girl who's interested in science fiction or fantasy would really enjoy this book. Yeah, it was obviously written with adolescent boys in mind but I think anyone can enjoy this wildly imaginative page turner.

The characters are all extremely likable. John Carter is the perfect southern gentleman. Honorable, loyal, incredibly brave, respectful to women, extremely handsome; a perfect hero who is never boorish or conceited. Then there's Sola, one of the few green Martians to show compassion and kindness, and Tars Tarkas(aren't these names so cool?)a ferocious green martian warrior with a tragic past who is also able to feel compassion and love. And I dare anybody to tell me that they wouldn't want a Woola of their very own! Dejah Thoris though is mainly for the guys. Carter's love and devotion for her was really sweet. I didn't even know that this was part of a book series until I read it on amazon and now I am really eager to read the other books of the series. And wasn't the end cool? I don't think I've ever read an ending quite like that before. What Carter found in the cave at the end was very creepy and intriguing. (I won't give out a spoiler)

Although this is pulp fiction and sort of like a comic book in a way,(I can see mothers in 1912 scolding their kids, "That Edgar Rice Burroughs is going to rot your mind if you keep reading it!") it's still light science fiction at it's best! (I'll warn you right off though, please don't expect something deep and complex like Dune or Darkover and post a review whining about it. Princess is purely for fun.) And am I the only one that thinks Princess would make a really awesome movie?
